Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parents Support School Events

Attend parent-teacher conferences to learn about your child"s progress in school. Parent-teacher conferences are a terrific opportunity for you to communicate with teachers about your child's progress. Typically, a parent-teacher conference will take 20 minutes. During this time, the teacher will show samples of your child's work and discuss the grade level standards so that you will have a better understanding of your child's specific strengths and areas of need.

Before the conference

  • Write down questions you have about the standards, expectations, etc.
  • Reflect on and jot down any information about your child that might be helpful for the teacher to know.
  • Talk to your child to find out about his or her perceived areas of strength and challenge.
  • Ask your child if there are any specific questions he or she would like you to ask the teacher.

During the conference

  • If you are unfamiliar with the report card, ask for a short explanation of how it works.
  • Ask the teacher to share examples of your child's work.
  • Ask the teacher to explain and give examples of "proficient" student work so you will know what the grade-level expectations are.
  • Don't hesitate to ask for clarification if the teacher uses terms you don't understand:
    • What do you mean when you say...?
    • What does that term mean?
    • How did you determine ...?
  • Ask how the teacher plans to support your child's progress.
  • Ask the teacher for specific suggestions about how you can support your child's progress at home.

After the conference

  • Discuss the report card with your child. Focus first on your child's strengths and then highlight 1-2 areas for growth.
  • Discuss the plan you have formed with the teacher to support learning at home.
  • Stay in touch with the teacher throughout the school year to monitor your child's progress.

Remember, a strong parent-teacher partnership will benefit your child's academic, social and personal growth.

Parent/Guardian Contact Information

In case of illness, accident or other emergency, the school will attempt to contact a child's parent or guardian. Please make sure the school has current contact information, including home, work, cell phone, pager numbers and email addresses. In addition, be sure to keep the office informed of any changes in emergency contacts or child care arrangements.

Facts for Parents

Each student should receive a copy of San Diego Unified School District's Facts for Parents publication:

Facts for Parents is a yearly publication that contains essential information about the district. It includes:

  • Gives basic information about the school district.
  • Explains parent rights and responsibilities.
  • Provides high school graduation requirements.
  • Outlines the district"s Zero Tolerance Policy, which prohibits weapons, violence, drugs, alcohol and tobacco at school.
  • Lists disclosures required by state or federal law.

Parents are encouraged to review the information with their child(ren). Several forms in the back must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned their child"s teacher or other designated person at the school.
